New Aldi to bring 20 jobs

A new supermarket will bring up to 20 jobs to a former pit town next year.

Aldi said that it was committed to investing in Dinnington, as work on its store continued this week.

Planners have given the final go-ahead for the German discount retailer to move in at the former Co-op site on Laughton Road.

The company’s report to Rotherham Borough Council’s planning board said that the location already benefited from an established food retail use but that the now-demolished Co-op building was outdated.

Aldi claims the lines it stocks are not overly specialised and so will not hurt Dinnington’s other businesses.

Amendments to the opening hours will allow the company to trade until 10pm in the run-up to Christmas.

An Aldi spokeswoman said: “We aim to open the store in 2011 and it will employ up to 20 people.

“It is planned that the store will open from 9am to 8pm from Monday to Saturday and from 10am to 4pm on Sundays."
