Wentworth and Dearne MP John Healey said: “I’ve been sceptical about the case that UK military intervention could make either us in Britain or the desperate citizens of Syria safer.”

Rotherham MP Sarah Champion said: “I voted to oppose because I do not believe the Prime Minister adequately made the case that airstrikes would defeat Daesh or make us safer at home.”

The vote on last night passed by 397 votes to 223.
