Months later – no date for monument repairs

A GRADE II-listed monument has still not been repaired more than two months on from when a car crashed into it.

Dinnington Cross (pictured), on Laughton Road, was damaged after a black Seat Leon smashed into the 14th-century fixture on July 17.

Police confirmed a 27-year-old man had been arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of drink and drugs, without a licence and no insurance.

Dave Smith, chairman of Dinnington St John’s Parish council, told a full town council meeting on September 12 that the cross had still not been repaired.

He added: “We really need to get on to Rotherham Council about this as it’s been a few months now.”

RMBC said it will take suitable action to address the repairs at the cross but did not offer a definitive date when works would begin.

Sam Barstow, assistant director of community safety and street scene at Rotherham Council, said: “The damage caused to the monument by a car has been reported to us and we are investigating the most appropriate course of action to secure the future of the cross.”
