Crews swept the channel and bank in dry suits until they found the man in a stretch of water near Meadowbank Road.

Paramedics treated him at the scene before moving him to Northern General Hospital, but he died in the early hours of Sunday morning, a police spokeswoman said.

She added that the man’s death is not presently being treated as suspicious.

Police have yet to release details of the dead man’s identity, how he came to be in the canal or how he died.
