A Yorkshire Air Ambulance spokeswoman confirmed its crews attended the incident and airlifted a lorry driver, aged in his 50s, to Northern General Hospital in Sheffield.

She said there were several casualties but others who were injured were taken to hospital by road ambulance.

Traffic remains extremely heavy on the two motorways and surrounding routes in Aston, Bramley and Whiston.

Motorists have been told to expect delays.

Earlier reports suggested the accident involved three cars and a lorry.
