MALTBY’S new academy has finally opened for students after a week-long weather delay, with principal David Sutton proudly declaring: “This is not just another new school.”

Academy status takes the Braithwell Road school out of local authority control, giving it access to new funding and technology through sponsors U-xplore.

The plans were criticised last year over a lack of consultation, and campaigners handed in an 800-signature petition opposing the change.

But there was no sign of the controversy as students turned up for lessons yesterday in the new teal and black uniform, which replaces the traditional brown and gold from the grammar and comprehensive days.

Mr Sutton said: “Maltby Academy is not just another new school, it will provide the first class education that the young people of Maltby deserve.

“It will equip them with the attitudes, skills and knowledge that they will need to lead successful lives. Our ambition is to develop successful learners, confident individuals and responsible citizens.”

Mr Sutton has targeted a minimum of 59 per cent of students gaining five GCSEs with English and maths, 14 per cent higher than last year’s record haul.
