Labour dominates in Rotherham elections

LABOUR held on to control of Rotherham Council last night’s local elections, winning 19 out of the 21 seats contested.

But independent candidate Clive Jepson shocked the midnight count by scoring a 93-vote margin over Labour’s Darren Hughes in Anston and Woodsetts.

He said: “I’m shocked but happy.”

Conservative Christopher Middleton also scored a convincing win in Sitwell, 281 votes ahead of Labour candidate Tajamal Khan.

Lauren Astbury became one of the youngest members of Rotherham Council with victory in Hellaby.

The 21-year-old Labour candidate campaigned while finishing her dissertation in history at York University.

She said: “I’m absolutely delighted. It’s just amazing—I can’t believe it.

“I just want to do the best for people in Hellaby. I’m looking forward to the work—it’s going to be a total change from university.”
