Kids’hokey-cokey take on Brexit vote

A LIGHT-HEARTED take on the generation-defining EU vote saw children across Rotherham celebrating European languages.

As the in/out debate reached a climax on Thursday, children showed “what it’s all about” with a giant Hokey Cokey sung in the most popular languages of Europe.

The children who take part in Lingotot language classes in Rotherham — all aged two to 11 — sang the Hokey Cokey in French and Spanish at their weekly language classes as part of a nationwide event across the UK.

Paula Renshaw, who runs the Lingotot franchise in Rotherham said: “Whilst the European Referendum will go completely over the heads of most of our students, the decisions will have a lasting impact on their lives.

“Regardless of the decision made by the British public, learning the language of one of our European neighbours will always be a pleasure and hugely beneficial — in fact some say that with voting out, the need to speak another European language will be even greater.

“I hope our European Hokey Cokey has helped to bring some light-hearted yet thought-provoking entertainment to the whole debate and demonstrates that there will always be a place for Europe among future generations.”

Paula said there was increasing evidence to suggest that the younger a child starts to learn a second language the more success they will have.
