Join Jayne in fight against cancer

A CANCER survivor is encouraging women to pull on their trainers and join her in the fight against cancer at Meadowhall’s Race for Life.

Jayne Murray (53), from Tinsley, is inspiring work colleagues, friends and family to join her in the annual Race for Life run taking place at Meadowhall Shopping Centre on Sunday as she and thousands of other women unite to raise funds to fight the disease.

Jayne, an operations administrator at the shopping centre, was diagnosed with lung cancer a couple of years ago after suffering from a persistent cough.

She underwent immediate surgery to remove the lung following her diagnosis and was then treated with chemotherapy for four months following the procedure.

Jayne said: “It’s now a year since I finished all my treatment.

“I was absolutely devastated when the doctor told me I had cancer, but now I’m determined to show cancer who’s boss.

“I might only have one lung, but there was no way I was going to let that stop me signing up and doing Race for Life for the second time.

“Cancer affects so many of us and it’s thanks to research and treatment that I’m still here today.

“I feel so passionately about recruiting an army of women to join me at this year’s event and want to do everything I can to urge people to enter Race for Life and fight back against this devastating disease.

“If I can do it, anyone can."

The event also comes at a sentimental time for Jayne who lost her aunt to cancer earlier this year.

Jayne will be running in her honour along with her 18-year-old daughter Rebecca.

Meadowhall events manager, Alex Caley, said: “Race for Life is an exceptional event which unites women of many different ages and from all walks of life together against a common cause; beating cancer.

“We are really pleased our staff such as Jayne, who has shown incredible bravery through adversity, are encouraging others to get involved.”
