Jobs joy as unemployment falls

The number of jobless in Rotherham continued to fall in the last three months - but it remains well above the national average.

New figures show that the number of people claiming Job Seekers’ Allowance in the town fell by more than 200 to 7,289 between May and August. drop cut the borough’s unemployment rate from 4.9 per cent to 4.5 per cent during the quarter, but it was still higher than across the Yorkshire region (4.2 per cent) and the country as a whole (3.6 per cent).

Men were more likely to be out of work than women, with 6.5 per cent of men (5,297) claiming benefit and 2.4 per cent of women (1,992) on the dole.
