Hundreds left without power due to smouldering cables

HUNDREDS of homes were left without power for more than seven hours after a problem with underground cables.

Northern Powergrid said 373 properties in the Worksop Road and Wesley Avenue of Aston and Swallownest were left without power from about 4.30pm on Wednesday (Jan 20) until 12.15am on Thursday (Jan 21).

Firefighters were called at 4.30pm following reports of smouldering underground cables and remained until electrical engineers took charge.

An area of pavement was cordoned off and those living near the site said there have been power outages in the area on a number of previous occasions.

A spokesman for Northern Powergrid said that it was made aware of the problem at 4.45pm on Wednesday and engineers set about repairing the fault.
