Howard Webb on duty at First World War football tribute

HOWARD Webb led teams out for the first match in a tournament marking the centenary of the First World War football truce.

The competition took place in Ypres, Belgium, where soldiers put down their weapons for a game in No Man’s Land at Christmas 1914.

Young academy players from across Europe travelled to the centenary tournament played last month on a pitch donated by the Premier League.

A PL spokesman said: “It gives players an educational and cultural experience to remember as well as allowing them to test themselves against some of the best young players on the pitch.”
