High winds fell trees in Rotherham

TREES in Rotherham fell victim to high winds this week as Rotherham was battered by the tail end of Hurricane Gonzalo.

Reader Gerald Robinson spotted a split tree on Tickhill Road just outside Maltby, while a large sycamore in Wath Road, Mexborough was also damaged in the wild weather on Tuesday.

Gusts of up to 40mph swept across South Yorkshire on Tuesday, while the day also saw several hours of driving rain.

A Met Office spokesman said on Tuesday that the the remains of Hurricane Gonzalo are running eastwards across the Atlantic, bringing strong winds and heavy rain to the UK.

Hurricane Gonzalo caused extensive damage when it crossed Bermuda last week.
