Four months in jail for woman who hurled racial abuse

A WOMAN has been jailed for hurling racial abuse in two separate incidents in Rotherham town centre.

Kelly Marie Walton (35), of no fixed address but formerly of the Flanderwell area of Rotherham, was sentenced at Sheffield Crown Court on Monday for using racially aggravated words that caused harassment, alarm and distress and locked up for four months.

The court heard that Walton shouted racially abusive language at a woman working in a deli in Wellgate in Rotherham at about 10.30am on September 11.

Later that day, at about 2pm, Walton was seen shouting racial abuse at a man and woman in a car in Wellgate.

PCSOs were called to the incident and Walton was arrested shortly afterwards.

PC Christopher Nicholson, hate crime coordinator for Operation Solar, said: “Any kind of hate crime will not be tolerated and I hope that this sentence sends out a clear message that anyone found to be committing any kind of hate crime will be dealt with.

“We want to give people the confidence to come forward and report any incidents to us. We will listen and we will act on it.

“Victims, witnesses or members of the public in Rotherham can provide information about hate crimes directly to the police by emailing [email protected].”
