The fire services, Environmental Health and the Environmental Agency are working together to stop the fire that has been burning "for weeks".

In a Facebook post, SYFR said: “This is a deep seated mixed waste fire that has been on-going for a number of weeks. There have been multiple fires within the waste – each of which has added further to the smoke plume.

“Fires like this are very difficult to deal with, but we are working with a range of partners – including the Environment Agency and local council – to get this one fully extinguished and ultimately minimise the impact on the environment and nearby residents.

“Thanks to the Environment Agency, we now have machinery on the scene that will help us break apart the waste and get access to some of the deep seated flames, but this will mean an increase in smoke and putting out the fire may be a long process.

“Our advice to local residents is to keep their windows and doors closed and avoid the plume where possible – anyone who has health concerns should seek medical advice or call NHS 111.”
