Fire crews rescue deer from Kilnhurst canal

FIREFIGHTERS with “hart” used a boat and net to rescue a deer from a Kilnhurst canal. Crews from Edlington station pulled the animal from the River Don Navigation, near the Victoria Street bridge, at around 7pm on Wednesday.

They were joined by officers from the RSPCA, who checked the small deer over before releasing it back into the wild.

Twitter user Danny Ransford asked South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue what crews were doing at the bridge.

They explained and he tweeted back: “Oh deer! Hope it was okay and rescued fine.”

A fire service spokesman said staff attended for around an hour and did not know how the animal got trapped in the water.
