'Fantastic' response to Tommy Screening

DETECTIVES investigating the murder of Maltby pensioner Tommy Ward said yesterday that they had received a fantastic response to an appeal on the BBCs Crimewatch Roadshow this week.

A reconstruction of the 80-year-old ex-miners final moments was aired on BBC One on Monday morning and is still available on the BBC iPlayer.

A police spokeswoman said the South Yorkshire force had received several calls in response to the TV show.Officers carried out house-to-house enquiries in Maltby after it was screened.

It is almost nine months since the brutal attack in the 80-year-olds home four months since he died and no-one has been charged.

The former soldiers 30,000 life savings were stolen in the incident.

Tommy was found seriously injured on Salisbury Road last October 1 and died in hospital on February 23.

A safety deposit box like the one stolen was found empty in Kilnhurst two weeks after the attack.

Det Chief Insp Vicky Short said: Weve had a fantastic response following the reconstruction on the BBC Crimewatch Roadshow programme, as well as an excellent reaction from the public to the day of action we carried out in Maltby, in conjunction with the TV appeal.

Weve received various pieces of information from both the day of action and the TV appeal, and as a result we do have new lines that my team will be conducting further enquiries into.

I am very pleased with the positive engagement we have received from the public and I do want to offer my thanks for their assistance with this investigation to help find Tommys killers.

Five people arrested in connection with the incident have been released.
