Family hail justice for Julie as 'evil' killer jailed

THE family of murder victim Julie Gallagher have spoken of their relief as “evil” killer George Gallagher was jailed for life today.

A jury at Sheffield Crown Court returned a guilty verdict today after a four-week trial.

Judge Mrs Justice Rafferty ordered that Gallagher (56), Eldon Road, Eastwood, who had denied murder, should serve a minimum of 20 years.

Speaking after the trial, a family spokesman said: “We are so relieved that we now have justice for Julie and although the guilty verdict will not bring Julie back, she is now able to rest in peace.

“We finally have closure on this terrible time in our lives and now are able look forwards.

“We have been sitting in court over the last few weeks, hoping to hear answers from

George Gallagher to answer the question why.

“However, he still fails to admit the pain and hurt he caused to Julie.

“He is an evil, dominating and controlling man who has shown no compassion or remorse since Julie’s death.”

The court had heard how Gallagher, a former miner, had stalked Julie (41) for months before plunging a knife through her heart at her home in Foljambe Road.

The court had heard that former steel worker Gallagher had a history of domestic violence against former partners.

The family spokeswoman added: “We wish to pay particular thanks to the brave women who have come forwards and given evidence at this trial.

“To have the courage to tell of their horrific experiences at the hands of George Gallagher has been significant in securing a conviction of murder against him.”

Julie was described by her family as a kind, fun loving daughter, sister, niece and friend who despite her illness, lived life to the full.

The spokeswoman added: “Anybody thinking of Julie would immediately think of her infectious laugh and her ability to make people smile.

“Our family and the community of Eastwood have lost a very special person.”

The family thanked Det Supt Colin Fisher of South Yorkshire Police, forensic experts and the Crown Prosecution Service for their continued hard work and dedication.
