Travel disruption and schools closed as Rotherham wakes to blanket of snow

SCHOOLS have closed and travel routes have been disrupted after heavy snowfall in Rotherham overnight.

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for snow and ice in the area,

As of 9am, Rotherham Council had announced the closure of 16 primary schools, six secondary schools, two special schools and a pupil referral unit.

Anston Greenlands J&I, Springwood Junior, Aughton Junior, Bramley Sunnyside Junior, East Dene Primary, Eastwood Village Primary, Ferham Primary, Listerdale Junior, Redscope J&I, Brookfield Primary (Swinton), Thornhill Primary, Thorpe Hesley Primary, Thurcroft Junior, Waverley Junior, Wickersley Northfield Primary, Woodsetts Primary.

Secondary Schools

Aston, Brinsworth, St Bernard's, St Pius, Swinton, Wingfield.

Special Schools

Newman, The Willows.

Other

Rowan Centre.

Several bus routes have been disrupted or suspended. Stagecoach announced that the 107 route between Rotherham and Swinton Lime Grove has been suspended and the 72 between Manvers and Chapeltown has been suspended.

First South Yorkshire announced the suspension of the 10 from Doncaster to Maltby, the 22a and 22c from Rotherham to Wath, the 26 from Whiston to Rotherham, the 27 from Crystal Peaks to Rotherham, the 29 and 29a from Harthill to Rotherham, the 73 and 73a from Treeton to Rotherham via Sheffield, the 135 and 135a from Sheffield to Rotherham, the 136 from Hoyland to Rotherham, the 137 from Blackburn to Rotherham, the 138, 139, 140, 141 and 142 from Kimberworth Park to Rotherham, the 208 from Worrygoose to Sheffield, the X54 from Harthill to Sheffield and the X7 from Maltby to Sheffield.

Rotherham Council said there would be disruption to bin collections and that its household waste and recycling centres would be open late today to allow staff to clear snow from paths and roadways.

It said its gritting teams had been out through the night but warned people to only travel if it was essential.
