Dearne Valley road closure alert

AN EMERGENCY road closure has been announced in the Dearne Valley which will see a major road shut for six weeks.

Barnsley Road in Goldthorpe will be closed from Sunday onwards.

Council officials said that the bridge adjacent to the Jet petrol station on Barnsley Road needed to be closed for safety reasons. 

A Barnsley Council spokesman said: "The bridge is owned by Network Rail, and following a recent inspection a serious defect was identified—extensive corrosion was found in several main beams.

A diversion route will be put in place via Barnsley Road, the A635 Goldthorpe Bypass and the B6098 Fields End Road.

Bus routes of services crossing the bridge will be affected and passengers arwe advised to contact South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive for details.

Network Rail is organising a scheme to prop the bridge and when this is complete the road closure can be removed.
