D-day for Kimberworth sports centre plan

COUNCILLORS will vote this week on a sports centre plan including eight new pitches—after four years and more than 1,000 complaints.

Two pitches would be flood-lit under the plans, which also include changing rooms, a play area, car park and lighting on West Hill in Kimberworth.

When it was first tabled in August 2006 there were 460 objections through letters and petitions and a year later an amended plan attracted an additional 133 letters.

Hull developers Malcolm Watkinson Ltd submitted further details in June and another petition with 539 names followed. There have been 946 signatures and 277 letters in total.

Objectors say the 46-acre development will result in loss of privacy and noise and light pollution for West Hill residents.

They also fear traffic and access issues and the oppose the loss of Greenbelt land.

Others suggest there could be an increase in antisocial behaviour and crime.

A design and access statement from the developers says: “This is a real opportunity to for the advancement and investment in sport for the local community and Rotherham.

“It would inappropriate as the whole nation is moving towards the macro effect of sport on health, and well-being not to grasp the nettle of sports development opportunities as they arise.
