Cyclists pedal for safety improvements

CYCLISTS from Rotherham joined hundreds of bikers who took part in a mass ride calling for safer bike routes.

Some 470 rode in the Big Ride as part of a national “Space for Cycling” campaign for better cycling provision including targeting election candidates to pledge support for improved safety.

Many riders travelled from Rotherham Borough Council’s Riverside House buildings into Sheffield to lend their support to the event on Saturday (25).

“It was an excellent event with quite a number of cyclists from Rotherham taking part,” said Paul Truin from the Cycle Rotherham group.

“There’s talk now of staging such a ride in Rotherham.”

Riders at the event at Sheffield’s Barkers Pool called for lower speed limits in residential areas and bike lanes on main roads.

Sheffield City Council said it was working with groups to improve cycling in Sheffield.
