Cyclist Paul Haynes (66) asked Cllr Roger Stone if the council would continue to paint “advisory” bike lanes in which cars can legally park.

Cllr Stone said the lanes gave guidance to drivers about how much space is needed by cyclists and encouraged people to cycle rather than drive.

Mr Haynes, who taught physics at Wath Comprehensive, said during a council meeting: “I have asked a question but not been given an answer.

“My pupils would have got no marks for that. The question was ‘Do you think it’s a good idea?’”

Cllr Stone said: “You’re not in a classroom now. We think it’s a better idea to keep putting cycle lanes down, even though we can’t stop people parking in them by law, than to do nothing.”
