Van stolen from delivery driver in distraction theft

POLICE have issued an appeal for witnesses after a delivery driver had his van stolen in a distraction theft in broad daylight.

The white Mercedes Sprinter van, registration number SG61 NUK, was stolen while parked on Hirstgate, Mexborough, shortly after 9.45am on Wednesday.

A police spokesman said: “At around 9.45am, the driver of the van pulled up on to Hirstgate, close to the junction with Doncaster Road.

“The driver delivered items from the van to one of the shops on the street, and on returning two men approached him. 

“The men attempted to distract him and whilst the driver was in the shop the males have stolen the van, driving off in the direction of Windhill Crescent.”

One of the men is described as being between 25 to 35-years-old with a tanned complexion and of a large build, wearing glasses and knee length shorts with a white T-shirt. The man also had his arm in a sling.

Anyone who witnessed the incident, or was in the area around the time it occurred, should contact police by dialling 101, quoting incident number 265 of September 2.
