Rape victim (15) "was walking to school"

DETECTIVES investigating the rape of a teenager as she walked to school have say they are "absolutely determined" to track down her attacker.

The 15-year-old was attacked in a wooded area off Rother View Road, Canklow at around 8.30am on Monday.

Officers have carried out enquiries in the area and high-visibility patrols have been stepped up, a police spokeswoman said.

Det Insp John Fitzgibbons, who is leading the investigation, said: “Officers have been carrying out extensive enquiries and we are absolutely determined to identify the suspect.

“The victim and her family have understandably been left very distressed by this incident and are receiving support from specially-trained officers.

“Officers are providing visible reassurance to parents and students who will be feeling shocked and unnerved by this incident.

“We are doing all we can to identify this individual and will continue to explore every avenue to resolve this matter as quickly as possible.”

Det Insp Fitzgibbons added: “I’d urge everyone living locally, or those who bring their children to school in this area, to cast their minds back to Monday morning.

“Did you see anything untoward or suspicious, someone who was perhaps out of place?”

The wooded area, which includes Boston Park and Moorgate Cemetery, is near to several schools and colleges.

The detective said: “Information has already been coming in from the public, for which we are grateful.
