Police warning on legal highs

POLICE have urged partygoers not to experiment with legal highs during the festive season.

Det Insp Graham Bulmer said: “Legal highs are far from safe. In fact, you are putting your life at risk if you choose to take them.

“They are dangerous and unpredictable and are often much stronger than the drugs they are designed to mimic.”

Legal highs — officially known as novel psychoactive substances — mimic the effects of controlled drugs and take a range of forms including herbal cannabis-like products, white powder and tablets.

They are made up of untested products, many of which fall outside current drug laws.

Det Insp Bulmer said: “Legal highs, along with other drugs, can cause people to behave in a violent and erratic way.

“These negative effects can take a few days to wear off completely, just like the comedown from stimulants, such as cocaine or amphetamines.”
