The man, who requires home care, was taken to hospital where he remains in a “serious but stable” condition, a police spokeswoman said.

Det Insp Richard Partridge added: “I’d like to thank the public and local community for their support so far.

“However, we are yet to locate the safe that we believe was taken from the man’s home when he was assaulted.”

The safe, which is light grey and has a key lock, is just big enough to accommodate A4 documents and weighs around 7kg.

The elderly victim remains “very unwell” in hospital and has not regained consciousness, Det Insp Partridge said.

He added: “It is vital we piece together what might have taken place before he was found injured at his home.

“Please look closely at the image of the safe — if you have seen anything that looks similar to this, in the Maltby area or across Rotherham, we’d like to hear from you.”

Two 19-year-old man are currently on police bail after being arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and burglary.
