Man jailed for possession of semi-automatic handgun

ILLEGAL firearms possession has landed a Denaby Main man with a three-year jail sentence.

Jay Benton (31), of Tickhill Square, admitted having a semi-automatic handgun and ammunition.

Police recovered the discarded loaded firearm and a magazine containing seven bullets from a garden in nearby Todmorden Close.

A forensic examination linked the items with Benton, who admitted possession and was sentenced on Tuesday at Sheffield Crown Court.

Det Con Mark Roostan, said: “I am really pleased with the work our officers have completed around this case which has resulted in a firearms and ammunition being removed from the streets of Doncaster.

“I hope this sentence serves as a warning to those who continue possess firearms illegally that we will come after you and we will not tolerate firearms on our streets.”

Benton was given three years for the firearm and three months for the ammunition, which will run concurrently.
