Man charged over "vicious" taxi driver assault

POLICE have charged a 22-year-old man in connection with a “vicious assault” on a 40-year-old taxi driver.

Jordan James, of Laudsdale Road in East Herringthorpe, will appear at Rotherham Magistrates’ Court tomorrow (Thursday), charged with assault.

The arrest comes four days after officers were called to the incident on Campbell Drive, Herringthorpe, at around 3.10am on Saturday, October 3.

The driver remains in a “serious but stable condition” in hospital, having suffered “multiple injuries” a police spokeswoman said this afternoon.

Three men aged 25, 21 and 20-years-old remain on police bail in connection with the attack.

Officers urge anyone with information about it to call 101 quoting incident number 178 of October 3, or quoting ‘Operation Throne’.

Det Insp Sean Bird, the investigating officer, said: “This was a vicious assault and we currently pursuing a number of positive lines of enquiry.

“I would continue to ask anyone who may have been in the area of Campbell Drive in the early hours of Saturday morning and has any information that may assist the investigation come forward and speak to officers.”
