House seriously damaged after yobs torch bin

Windows shattered and guttering melted after a plastic wheelie bin was set alight next to a property at The Maltings, Canklow, at around 9.55pm last night.

The woman occupant was alerted by the sound of shattering glass, but escaped unharmed.

It took firefighters around half an hour to put out the blaze which neighbours had doused with water prior to their arrival.

A fire service spokesman said: “This appears to have been a deliberate fire.

“It caused quite significant damage to the property but, luckily, did not spread to the inside.”

He added: “We would urge people to bring their wheelie bins into their properties as soon as they can after collection and secure them in a position away from their property if possible.”
