Drugs and alcohol may have played a part in car meet collision which injured biker

DRUG driving and alcohol could have played their parts in a collision at a car meet which left a biker with "life-altering" injuries.

Emergency services were called to Seldon Way, Catcliffe, at 8.30pm on Saturday following reports of a collision involving a motorcycle and a Volkswagen Golf.

Police found around 100 cars gathered for a "car meet" on the industrial estate.

A 23-year-old man, believed to be the driver of the Golf, was arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving, failing to stop after a collision, driving while over the prescribed limit for controlled drugs and driving whilst unfit through drink or drugs.

He has since been released on police bail.

The motorcyclist, a 35-year-old man, suffered serious, life-altering injuries, and remained in hospital today, police said.

Road policing officers are appealing for witnesses and anyone with video footage or information to come forward and assist with their enquiries.

Chief Insp Lee Carlson, of the operational support unit, said: “We know from our enquiries that there were a vast number of people present at the scene of this collision and we are appealing for them to speak to us.

“The overwhelming majority of people who attend these meets do so for their shared enjoyment of vehicles and aim to do so safely and with respect for the community, but it can be spoilt by a minority and can have devastating consequences.

“We will continue to deal with this minority and anti-social and dangerous driving on our roads will not be tolerated.”

Witnesses or anyone with any footage is asked to report it online or via WebChat or call 101 quoting incident number 848 of January 14.

Alternatively, if you prefer not to give your personal details, you can stay anonymous and pass on what you know by contacting the independent charity Crimestoppers.
