COUNCILLORS spoke of their delight after a disused patch of land was “transformed” into a community garden.

The scheme, which has been funded by the Towns and Villages Fund, has seen the area around the Ridgeway stores revamped.

Previously, Rotherham Council said it had suffered from a lack of purpose and the existing boundary walls and steps outside of the shop were eroded and damaged.

These have now been replaced and revamped, which improves the appearance of the area and it is now considered a more accessible space for residents.

East Herringthorpe is in the Dalton and Thrybergh Ward and ward councillor Cllr Joanna Baker-Rogers, described the look and feel as transformed.

She aded: “The new green space is now a focal point in the heart of the community.

“Thanks to the new paving and steps that have been installed, the area is also now more accessible.”

Ward colleague Cllr Michael Bennett-Sylvester added: “I am pleased that we have been able to make these improvements for residents in East Herringthorpe.

“One of the ward priorities for Dalton and Thrybergh is to ensure that our neighbourhoods are safe, clean, tidy and celebrated.”

The Towns and Villages Fund is a £4 million commitment from Rotherham Council to deliver improvements to local towns and villages across the borough.

Speaking about the fund, council deputy leader Cllr Sarah Allen, said: “As a council, we are committed to improving our local town and village centres across Rotherham.
