18 "scary clown" incidents reported in Rotherham

POLICE are investigating reports of a teenage boy being attacked in Rotherham by an assailant dressed as a clown.

Following reports of a resurgence of the “scary clown” craze around the country, with 18 reported sightings in Rotherham, South Yorkshire Police were told last night of an incident in Lordens Hill, Dinnington, which 17-year-old Owen Russell was reportedly hit by a log thrown at him.

It is one of 18 “scary clown” incidents reported in Rotherham this week.

Police have also received were also 11 reports in Doncaster, 10 in Barnsley and 21 in Sheffield involving “clowns”, including several incidents of window-knocking and two of people with knives, which are being investigated by police.

 

Supt Colin McFarlane said: “There is a clear distinction to be drawn between young people who might be dressing up as we move into the Guy Fawkes and Hallowe’en period and those that are dressing as clowns in order to commit public order offences or harassment.

“Clearly those that are crossing the threshold of criminality and especially if they are carrying weapons will be dealt with accordingly.

“I need people to understand that consequences of their actions and to take responsibility for them - South Yorkshire Police will not tolerate criminal behaviour.

“I urge anyone who feels frightened or threatened to report it to police.”

Officers are working with the victim of the Dinnington and enquiries are ongoing.
