Crime-hit scouts helped by Mexborough pub-goers

FUND-RAISERS did a good turn for crime-hit scouts with a family fun day at a Mexborough pub.

Mexborough Ferryboat Association organised the event at the George and Dragon to support Mexborough Scouts after camping equipment was stolen from their HQ.

Pub-goers had a chance to try out the Splat-a-Ray game and tombola, while younger punters enjoyed at badge-making, face painting and a bit of boxing with local legend and ex-fighter Tommy Joyce.

The event raised £500 for the Scouts.

Ferryboat Association member Daniel Goddard said: “The sun was out and the community spirit was evident and everybody had a great day.

“Can we say thank you to Michael Deakin the landlord of the George a really family friendly place, Robbo for his amazing wood fired BBQ, Mexborough Scouts, our super talented face painter from Mexborough Rangers, Tuby's funfair, Tommy Joyce for giving boxing lessons to the kids, all of our volunteers, Tony Slater and the Stars In Their Eyes gang for providing the entertainment, and most of all the people of Mexborough for being so warm and generous and bringing a real community to the event.

“The association planned the day to help fund our continued work on the canal but after finding out the devastating news of the theft of Mexborough Scouts camping equipment a few weeks before the event we decided to donate all of our proceeds to them.”
