Council tenants offered up to £20k to help buy a new home

UP to £20,000 is being offered to Rotherham council tenants who want to buy their own home under a new Government-backed scheme.

The Social Mobility Scheme helps council tenants who qualify for Right to Buy but who do not want to purchase their current home.

The council said the offer is only open for a short time and funds are limited.

Dave Richmond, RMBC director of housing, asset management and neighbourhood services, said: “This Government scheme will help people raise a deposit to buy a home that is more suitable for their needs as well as freeing up a council property for someone on the housing register.”

All applications need to be submitted before January 8 and you must be able to buy a home by March 31 2016.

You also need to meet one of the following criteria:

  • You are aged 55 or over and your current home will not meet your future needs
  • You live in a non-traditional property and can not secure a mortgage
  • You need to move for work-related reasons

If you are interested and meet the criteria apply by email to [email protected] by January 8 quoting 'Rotherham’s Right to Buy Social Mobility Scheme' and you will be contacted with more information.
