Commuters’ battle through soggy streets

MOTORISTS endured commuting chaos this morning as heavy rain brought slow traffic and flooding to Rotherham’s roads.

Routes across the borough were filled with queues as drivers battled the soggy conditions, which followed overnight downpours.

Elsecar Road at Brampton-Bierlow and Packman Road near Upper Haugh were among the stretches with deep standing water and severe flooding.

And there could be worse to come as forecasters predicted more rain until mid-afternoon.

The Institute of Advanced Motorists this week issued fresh advice about safe driving in autumnal conditions, warning that a patch of wet leaves can be as dangerous as hitting standing water and saying drivers should ensure their wiper blades are in good condition to aid driving in the wet.
