Chief Constable standing down

SOUTH Yorkshire’s top police officer is quitting in October after seven years of leading the force.

The county’s police authority has agreed Chief Constable Med Hughes’ request to retire in the autumn—a year ahead of the end of his contract.

Mr Hughes has been in the position since September 2004, having previously been Deputy Chief Constable with South Yorkshire Police.

During his time as Chief Constable, South Yorkshire has seen crime levels drop, with 56,736 fewer victims of crime in the last four years.

Charles Perryman, chair of South Yorkshire Police Authority, said: “We would like to thank Med Hughes for his commitment, support and leadership during the last seven years.

“The Chief Constable has shown a positive and transparent approach to managing the force, which in turn has led to a mutual respect and productive dialogue with members.

“We wish him well for the future.”
