Campaigners call public meeting over future of Herringthorpe Playing Fields

CAMPAIGNERS battling plans for floodlit rugby pitches on Herringthorpe Playing Fields are stepping up their opposition to the proposals.

Rotherham Rugby Club’s plans have been approved by Rotherham councillors, but the Herringthorpe Playing Fields Community Groups has launched a new campaign against the plans.

The group will hold a public open-air Hands off Herringthorpe meeting at the site at 1.30pm on December 1.

Campaigners see the rugby club’s plans as opening the door to further development of the playing fields and they are urging Rotherham Borough Council not to sign a lease which would pave the way for new fencing and ten 15-metre floodlight columns.

The club says that the public will still be able to use the playing fields.
