Bravery awards for blaze heroes

THREE heroes who saved an elderly woman as fire engulfed her bungalow have had their bravery recognised.

They saved the life of 84-year-old Barbara Hughes when a chip pan blaze engulfed her Norstead Crescent kitchen, in Bramley.

Doug Hughes (53) was working at a neighbouring home when he spotted the flames and forced his way in to help the trapped Mrs Hughes.

The British Gas service manager, from Swinton, was awarded a Chief Fire Officer’s Commendation at Rotherham fire station.

Colleague Matt Goodison (30) and neighbour George Edwards were both given Certificates of Appreciation for their assistance during the rescue, last May.

Doug said: “I couldn’t believe the intensity of the blaze and when I spotted the lady inside the house I knew I had to get in there quickly.

“She was obviously extremely frightened but thankfully with the help of Matt and George I was able to get her out safely.”

George (62) added: “I’m pleased I was in the right place to be able to help. Being recognised is fantastic, and it makes me realise what a fantastic job firefighters do dealing with incidents like this day in, day out.”

Technical service engineer Matt said: “It was very much a joint effort. I’m just glad we arrived when we did because the fire was already intense.”

A Commendation is the highest accolade which South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue can award for heroic actions. A Certificate of Appreciation is the second highest.
