Back from the brink and now thriving

A ONCE-doomed youth service has bounced back, earning a gold award for its commitment to carers and parents.

Chat ’n’ Chill offers activities, day trips and overnight stays for around 40 people aged 13 to 25 every month.

But government cuts meant the service — with branches in Maltby and Kimberworth — recently lost most of its funding and was set to close in July.

The Kimberworth Park Community Partnership (KPCP) stepped in with money to save the service until at least April 2017.

Now it has earned top marks in Rotherham Borough Council’s Rotherham Charter scheme, recognising its work to engage and earn the trust of service users and their families.

Dr Claire-Marie Whiting, an education psychologist with the council’s children and young people’s services, said: “The group leaders have been steadfast in their commitment to the charter principles, despite a turbulent time recently in terms of funding.

“It is clear that the young people and their parents and carers want to thank the group managers — educational psychologists Jemma Wilkinson and Emma Lambley.

“Jemma and Emma have continued to give their time to the group in addition to their day jobs, such is their passion and belief in the power of the group to change lives for young people with autism.”

The group was assessed for its gold award over two days, by independent charter lead Pip Wise and Rotherham Parent Forum co-chairman Amanda Moreman.

Ms Moreman said: “I was totally blown away by Chat ’n’ Chill. The young people seemed so relaxed in this safe place. They shone with confidence and spoke about how much they owed to the group — how it had made such an impact on them.

“The group provides a safe environment that celebrates difference and oozes warmth and love for everyone.”

Ms Wise said: “The sessions were busy and extremely well-managed.

“Staff are skilled and knowledgeable about autism and are acutely aware of individuals’ likes and needs.

“Young people spoke of feeling safe and of being able to express themselves. Emphasis is placed on developing self-esteem and confidence.”

She added: “It is clear that the service is incredibly valued by the young people who attend and also their families.”
