Army Cadets seeking more adult recruits

ACTION men and women from across the borough are being encouraged to become volunteer members of the Army Cadet Force.

A shortage of adult support volunteers for the region’s 1,700 cadets has prompted an appeal for active men and women who enjoy the outdoors to come forward and make the most of their free time.

Anyone aged over 18 can volunteer for the local detachments in Rotherham, Wath or Mexborough to become part of the organisation which take part in training weekends and summer camps throughout the year.

Cadet Kirsten McCluskie (17), from the Rotherham detachment on Fitzwilliam Road, Eastwood, said: “I love every minute of being a cadet. The ACF is a great place to make new friends, develop skills and enjoy experiences that many other people my age rarely get the chance to do.

“But the whole unit can only exist if we continue to have enough adult volunteers. Without them we will struggle to be able to provide high quality training and opportunities for other cadets like me.

“Being an Adult Instructor in the ACF is enormously rewarding.

“Besides having the opportunity to play a leading role in the development of young people, it's also a terrific way to take part in a range of exciting military-orientated pursuits — from training weekends and summer camp holidays, to white-water rafting and rock climbing.”

Col David Fuller, OBE, Commandant of Humberside & South Yorkshire ACF added: “You don’t need any military experience to become an instructor and you can even gain qualifications that will help you in your workplace.

“We’d love to hear from people who are willing to offer their time and enthusiasm to join our ranks as an adult instructor.”
