Plummeting weekend temperatures which saw thermometers drop below minus ten in some parts of the borough were followed by the blizzards as thousands made their way to work.

And weather forecasters are predicting more of the same with heavy snow forecast for tonight, further showers for the rest of the week and even colder conditions.

Despite reassurances that gritting operations had been revised since last winter’s heavy snowfall, many motorists found themselves struggling to make progress on minor routes.

Those heading to or from Sheffield from the borough were also caught up in heavy traffic as hazardous driving conditions caused snarl-ups on the A630  and A61 commuter routes.

Wentworth Primary School and Dearne High School were among the casualties of the seasonal weather—succumbing to all-day closures—while Maltby Hall Infants postponed its Monday morning opening until 10am.
