Actor Chris backs food hamper appeal

A PROJECT which is hoping to grant families’ Christmas wishes by delivering much-needed food hampers is still on the hunt for volunteers as the big day approaches.

Food Aware, which has received requests from 30 different projects and groups for 1,500 hampers in the run-up to Christmas, is having a Volunteers Day next Monday and staff appealed for anyone with a couple of spare hours to come and help out.

Actor Chris Walker dropped in this week to give his backing to the project, which was founded in Mexborough but now covers large areas of South Yorkshire, collecting unwanted food from supermarkets and delivering it to needy families and community groups.

Sean Gibbons, the man at the helm of Food Aware, said: “The food is past its best-before date but it is perfectly fine to eat.

“We are still appealing for volunteers to help us pack food parcels and would really like to hear particularly from someone who could act as a delivery driver.

“They will be reimbursed for any fuel used.”
