Plastic grates to beat Rotherham's scrap bandits

ROTHERHAM Council is turning to plastic to beat thieves who are stealing expensive metal gully covers to sell for scrap

Three different types of plastic gully covers have been identified as replacements for cast-iron or sprung steel grates, which cost more than £100 each to replace.

But councillors have been told that there is also a rise in the theft of manhole and hydrant covers, which are the responsibility of the various utility covers.
