School bus passes axed.

COUNCILLORS will save £11,400 a year after putting the brakes on free bus passes at two schools.

Travel assistance for nearly 50 youngsters heading to Aston Fence Junior and Infants or Aston Academy has been revoked after 15 years.

Pupils travelling from the Coalbrook Estate in Woodhouse Mill had been eligible because the walk to school unsafe.

A Rotherham Borough Council spokesman said: “Recent reviews by Transportation Unit have now identified an available safe walking route.”

Current zero-fare passes can be used until the end of the school year in July but will not be renewed in September.

Last September the council pulled a similar free travel scheme at Blackburn Primary School, saving £8,500 a year

I am totally outraged by this, how can it possibly be safe for children of primary school age to walk over a mile on their own, it is totally unsafe, as the school is on on the A57 with no crossing patrol or pelican crossing. Parking is already a nightmare, so with an additional 30+ cars, it will be a hazzard and very unsafe, not just for the children attending Aston Fence but also other road users, have the council thought of this????????
