Tram-train is 'what we have been waiting for'

Tram-train plan welcomed.

BUSINESS leaders have welcomed the news that a planned tram-train link with Sheffield could run long-term.

It would see the vehicles operate on the freight route from Rotherham before joining the Sheffield Supertram network at Meadowhall South.

Three trams an hour would run from Sheffield city centre, through the refurbished Rotherham Central station to Parkgate Shopping.

A pilot project could lead to the scheme being properly introduced in 2014.
Andrew Denniff, executive director of Barnsley & Rotherham Chamber of Commerce, said:

“This is a project we have supported from day one.

“The extended line and regular service will bring great benefits, not only to Rotherham, but would develop and enhance the overall transport infrastructure across the region.

“We look forward to working with our partners and promoting the pilot project as soon as possible.”

what we want is a supertram link for all the local towns. thats what we were promised when they took our taxes to pay for sheffields supertram. blairs govmnt turned down an application for funds for a tram extension which was avery small amount (50 mill)while at the same time providing billions for london.
