Fears over plans for giant Tesco.

SUPERMARKET giant Tesco claims a giant new store planned for Rotherham will boost trade in Rotherham town centre.

The supermarket giant has submitted proposals to redevelop a site the size of 38 tennis courts with a 24-hour store at Walker Place.

A formal application also includes plans for a 550-space car park, petrol station and demolition of the Centenary Way flyover.

The £40 million project will create more than 450 jobs—about 200 in addition to the workforce currently at the firm’s Forge Island store.

A spokesman for developers TCN said: “Tesco’s existing unit is outdated, tired, unappealing and on a constrained site surrounded on three sides by waterways.

“This redevelopment will enable Tesco to provide a modern anchor facility in the town centre, better meeting the needs of residents and will also release the existing site at Forge Island for redevelopment.

“The proposed new store and petrol station will help to claw back trade that currently leaks to out-of-centre foodstores and retail parks.

But objectors, including the Rotherham Civic Society, say giant store could ruin the renaissance of the town centre and have called for it to be scaled down.
