Heavyweight champ 'Iron' Hague recalled

A PAINTING of Mexborough-born heavyweight boxer James William 'Iron' Hague will be presented to Cusworth Hall Museum this weekend.

And to celebrate the long-term loan of the painting, Swinton historian Giles Brearley will give a talk at the Cusworth Lane. Doncaster, venue at 2pm on Sunday.

A spokesman for the event said: “The painting from 1911 is now on long-term loan to Cusworth Hall Museum from 'Iron' Hague’s family.

'Iron' Hague (1885-1951), was the English heavyweight boxing champion between 1909 and 1911 during which time he defended his title five times.”

To celebrate the arrival of the artwork Mr Brearley will give a talk about 'Iron' Hague.

The free event will feature a photo presentation of the life and times of the South Yorkshire Champion as well as slides of old Mexborough, colliery life and fairground and bare knuckle boxing.
