BUSINESS leaders welcomed retail expert Mary Portas’ support for Rotherham’s town centre initiatives—and echoed her call for more to be done to encourage new businesses and boost trade.

Andrew Denniff, executive director at Barnsley and Rotherham Chamber of Commerce, said cutting regulation, new parking arrangements and tackling business rates could all help the fortunes of both town centres.

“We were really pleased to see Mary Portas’ acknowledgement of the achievements in our two town centres.

“But we would continue to support her call for more innovative thinking around car parking, business rates and more flexibility in local regulation and licensing legislation in an attempt to build on some of the progress that has recently been made.”
