FORMER Brecon Hotel owners Liz Womble and Janet Stancliffe are back in business with a new venture at the Phoenix Sports and Social Club in Brinsworth.

The sisters are opening a restaurant at the club which will be called Athel’s in memory of their father, Athel Carr, who opened the Brecon in Moorgate Road 48 years ago.

The Brecon closed in September hit by a double whammy of disappointing returns from Christmas and the demand for ever-cheaper accommodation.

They have taken on the catering at the Phoenix in Pavilion Lane and will be serving  a familiar brand of food with the help of Liz’s husband Trevor and chefs Neville Cooke and Ian Norton.

Liam O’Sullivan, bar manager at the Phoenix, said: “The Brecon Hotel was well loved in Rotherham for decades and the food has been part of the town’s staple diet. It’s great that we’re now going to experience that at the club.

Businessman Azad Yousaf (30) bought the Brecon Hotel from Liz and Janet and intends to revive its fortunes as a restaurant and hotel.

It’s great to be back - SEE THIS WEEK’S ADVERTISER.
